However, there are some places where oxygen-averse microorganisms like those from Earth’s earliest days have re-emerged. And one such place is hidden high in the Swiss Alp’s Piora Valley. The pink anoxygenic phototroph Chromatium okenii—and more generally, the whole community of anaerobic microorganisms of the pink bacterial layer that forms in the chemocline zone—are very important for the ecology of the lake.
