Let’s Begin…
In the 1960s, the FBI amassed almost 2,000 documents in an investigation into one of America’s most celebrated minds. The subject of this inquiry was a writer named James Baldwin, one of the best-selling Black authors in the world at the time. What made him loom so large in the imaginations of both the public and the authorities? Christina Greer explores the life and works of James Baldwin.
Baldwin researched, wrote about, and debated the generations long inequality that existed in the United States for Black Americans. Do you think people like Bobby Kennedy could have done more to highlight the concerns of Baldwin and the communities he represented? Why do you think it was not a priority for mayors, governors, and even the president to address Baldwin’s concerns? Since Black Americans and homosexuals in this country are still not treated equally and with full protections of the law, did Baldwin succeed in his efforts? In your opinion, what other systems are currently in place that take away the economic and physical security and safety for some Americans? How can elected leaders and everyday people work toward a more equitable and just society?
