Let’s Begin…
"Rock-star physicist" Brian Cox talks about his work on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Discussing the biggest of big science in an engaging and accessible way, Cox brings us along on a tour of the massive project.
Cox describes how the scientists involved in establishing the LHC had to find clear ways of communicating their goals to government officials (like British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s) and other potential funders. When government officials won’t support certain scientific initiatives, do you think it’s because they dispute the scientific evidence, they have ethical objections, or they simply don’t understand the science involved? Are there other reasons they might not be supportive? Can you think of example(s) to support your opinion?
