When purchasing a commodity item, one is conscious of the conflicting interests of buyer and seller regarding price, but not so much of other consumers. In an auction, the seller doesn’t set the price (there may be a reserve price, but that’s usually much lower than the final price), consumers (called bidders in the setting of auctions) do. How does this influence the behavior of bidders with respect to one another?
